James Lindsay

"James J. Lindsay serves as an Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame, US Army Science Board and Special Operations Advisory Group to the Secretary of Defense.

Gen. Lindsay enlisted in the Army in 1952, General Lindsay's command assignments range from platoon through MACOM in peacetime and war. His early assignments were with the 82nd Airborne Division and 77th Special Forces Group. He held eight different positions in the 82nd Airborne from platoon to division level. In Vietnam, he served with the Vietnamese Airborne Brigade, commanded the 2d Battalion 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division and was the G3, 9th Infantry Division. He also served as a General Officer, and commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, the Infantry School, and the XVIII Airborne Corps. He also served as Commander in Chief, United States Readiness Command and was the first Commander in Chief, United States Special Operations Command. General Lindsay organized and served as first commander of congressionally mandated U.S Special Operations Command, comprised of Special Operations Forces of all services: Navy Seals; Army Rangers and Green Berets; Air Force Air Commandos; and the counter-terrorist joint task force.

Unique responsibilities in the areas of: research, development, acquisition, procurement, programming and budgeting. Only one of ten Department of Defense unified commands with own separate (from Army, Navy, and Air Force) program and budget--$3.1 billion annually. General Lindsey trained and deployed over 500 teams to sixty-three different nations to include a joint special operations task force of over 4000 personnel with responsibility for most of the key targets on Operation Just Cause in Panama - December 1989.

General Lindsay retired on 1 July 1990. General Lindsay has compiled an extraordinary career. Additionally, he is a member of the United States Army Ranger Hall of Fame. He was also the 1996 recipient of the Infantry's Doughboy Award, and the 1998 recipient of the United States Special Operations Command Bull Simon Award.
