DPI Engine
Network Application Visibility Library (NAVL) is a next-generation Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) software engine that provides real-time, Layer-7 classification of network traffic. NAVL uses a combination of deep packet and deep flow inspection techniques to accurately identify today’s most common applications including Mobile, Social Networking, P2P, Instant Messaging, File Sharing, Enterprise and Web 2.0 applications. NAVL offers a deeper understanding of how the network is being used by providing application recognition and detection in addition to flow specific attributes and metadata extraction for further traffic analysis.
- This DPI engine is advertised for use with lawful intercept, business gateways, and "content filtering".
The technologies advertised can identify and re-route certain types of traffic that have been pre-defined as "suspect" for law enforcement surveillance and/or interception. Metadata is also collected simultaneously and reported in real time.

Board Members
Jason Richards President and CEO
Jason brings over 10 years of product development, operations and sales experience in the network management industry. Most recently Jason was with Packeteer, an industry leading pioneer in network monitoring, management and optimization technologies. At Packeteer, Jason held numerous roles in the Operations and Sales Teams and lead his regional sales team as one of the top performing regions in the world in 2007. Prior to that Jason held a senior position in Engineering with Workfire Technologies, a British Columbia start up company building Internet Acceleration Technologies that was acquired in 2000, the largest software acquisition in Canada at the time. Jason has a BS in Physics and a BS in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia.
Derek Lownsbrough Vice President of Engineering
Derek has been developing pioneering network technology for over 15 years. Most recently, Derek was the Vice President of Engineering at Itiva, leading the development of new systems for high definition content distribution across the Internet. Previously, Derek was the lead technologist at Workfire Technologies, which was acquired in 2000. Derek then spent almost six years with Packeteer leading the engineering teams responsible for classification and security. Derek brings leadership, experience and a history of success to Vineyard Networks. Derek holds a BA in English and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Victoria and holds three patents in network optimization.
Josh Zieske Director of Quality Assurance
Josh brings over twelve years of direct experience in the development and testing of DPI, application acceleration and Layer 7 classification technologies. Josh led the design and development of product quality frameworks at several leading application intelligence companies in Canada, Sweden and the United States. As well as being extremely well versed in all aspects of development, Josh has extensive experience in system management and operations. Josh has a BS in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia.
Paul Ellis Director of Operations
Paul has been managing the Operations organizations for over 15 years at leading network infrastructure companies including Packeteer and EMC Data Domain. Paul brings his extensive experience in areas such as product and customer support, training, documentation, and logistics to Vineyard Networks. Paul holds a Bachelors in Engineering Physics and a Masters in Computer Engineeing from Royal Military College in Canada. He spent 15 years with the Canadian Airforce both in Canada and overseas managing the CP-140 Aurora Maritime Patrol Aircraft and the Canadian Fleet of CF-104 Starfighters based in Germany.
Brent Bolleman Director
Brent is an experienced entrepreneur with a focus on technology and finance. Brent is currently a fund manager for the Southern Interior Innovation Fund and is actively involved in several of its investments, including Vineyard Networks. Brent was previously providing management consulting to technology companies, and prior to that was a founding CEO of Ontain Corporation (payment software) and Sonigistix Corporation (audio hardware). Brent holds a Masters degree in Applied Science from the University of British Columbia.
