Background

"SCOPE Alliance is a group of leading Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) that formed in early 2006 to promote an ecosystem that produces components of Carrier-Grade Base Platforms (CGBPs). The SCOPE Alliance develops applicable profiles (subsets) of existing CGBP component standards and specifications and identifies gaps in these specifications. At the time of its inception, there was a gap in the marketplace of open architecture and interface specifications and/or missing required feature(s) within one platform area which might create fragmentation in the supplier sector by allowing different incompatible implementations to be developed; which could be costly to end users. SCOPE Alliance developed gap analyses and white papers and technical position papers to help industry gain better insight into the technical advancements and future direction relating to CGBPs.

SCOPE Alliance analyzed the marketplace and made recommendations on how to fill some of these gaps. By identifying common features that are important for NEPs, SCOPE Alliance’s thought leadership enabled improved interoperability and a real multi-vendor ecosystem. NEPs benefited with a faster time to market, investment protection, increased product life cycle, high availability, and environmental standard compliance. Additionally, Service Providers were able to accelerate service deployment on a stable and flexible platform with confidence, due to the fact that the platform building blocks were all consistent with SCOPE profiles, which allowed integration of the carrier grade features required by Service Providers.

This professional organization included members and suppliers from the leading telecom companies, 'Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Motorola, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel and their major suppliers." [1]
