Background

Juniper Networks is a US company that is publicly traded {JNPR:) with majority of shares owned by Ericsson

"Juniper Networks, Inc. engages in the design, development, and sale of products and services that together provide its customers with network infrastructure.

The company serves the networking requirements of global service providers, enterprises, and public sector organizations that view the network as critical to their success. It offers a product portfolio that spans routing, switching, security, application access, and mobility device security.

The company sells its network products and service offerings through direct sales and through distributors, value-added resellers, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners to end-users in the service provider and enterprise markets.

Service providers include wireline, wireless, and cable operators, as well as major Internet content and application providers.

The enterprise market includes enterprises and public sector organizations, such as governments and research and education institutions.

Segments: The company operates in two segments, Infrastructure and Service Layer Technologies (SLT).

The Infrastructure segment primarily offers scalable routing and switching products that are used to control and direct network traffic from the core, through the edge, aggregation, and the customer premise equipment level.

Infrastructure products include its Internet protocol (IP) routing, carrier Ethernet routing portfolio, and Ethernet switching portfolio. Additionally, the Infrastructure segment offers a wireless local area network (WLAN) solution that provides performance, security, and management for mobile applications.

The SLT segment offers solutions that meet an array of its customers' priorities, from protecting the users, applications and data on the network itself to providing network services across a distributed infrastructure.

Ericsson has had a history in supporting Juniper Networks through complete acquisition. The partnership was created while the company was still privately owned, prior to Juniper Networks getting an IPO to sell stockshares publicly.

  • September 2, 1997: Ericsson, Nortel (Northern Telecom), the Siemens/Newbridge Alliance, 3Com, UUNET formed and investment relationship with Juniper Network, giving $56 Million usd to transform the internet. "In addition to ownership interests, the participating companies have the opportunity to integrate Juniper Networks technology with their existing product lines and services worldwide." Ericsson and Juniper form alliances with Nokia Seimens, IBM, and Dell.

  • May 16, 1999: Ericsson and Juniper Networks partnered in "a series of strategic agreements enabling the next-generation of multi-service IP network solutions. The first of the agreements was a contract that allows Ericsson full rights to distribute immediately the M40 Internet backbone router as the Ericsson AXI 520. The Ericsson/Juniper cooperation allows carriers and ISPs to take advantage of Ericsson's systems integration and turn-key support, global distribution and professional services, while benefiting from Juniper Networks extensive IP backbone routing experience.

" The aim of the joint venture is to manage data communications between mobile phone networks and Internet Protocol (IP) networks. All hardware manufactured by the joint venture will be sold exclusively by Ericsson. Ericsson will be the lead partner in the venture, owning 60 percent, the companies said. A board made up of Ericsson and Juniper representatives, to start, will select a chief executive from Ericsson and a chief operating officer from Juniper, company representatives said. The joint venture is expected to be formed in the first quarter of 2001." 2000: As part of both companies' interest in developing integrated IP solutions, the two also have signed a cooperative technology agreement to explore converging opportunities in voice and IP. Separately Ericsson has increased its minority equity interest in Juniper Networks and taken a position on Juniper Networks Board".

In 2001, Ericsson and Juniper Networks formed a joint venture to "deliver mobile Internet routing products to be sold exclusively by Ericsson, and will ensure product availability for ISPs and mobile operators building GPRS and 3G systems."

We have long been a supplier of the technology that forms the basis for the very successful Ericsson GGSN, the most broadly deployed mobile packet gateway in the industry. Juniper

  • 2006 Ericsson buying Juniper "Apparently, Juniper is getting a big win in China, but under the cover of Ericsson. In case you missed it – Juniper won a $120 million contract from Microsoft (over two years.)" and "According to reporting from Telephony Online's Ed Gubbins, Verizon's principal hardware provider for FiOS is Juniper Networks. In fact, Gubbins reports, Verizon contributes 13% of Juniper's total revenue, and may be the sole reason why that company found black ink again last year. Juniper's E-series routers service Verizon's broadband network. Last October, Juniper announced a major upgrade to its routers' operating system, adding features that included the capability for service providers to deploy deep packet inspection -- the ability to analyze Internet traffic based on its contents.

The Aug 2009 version of Juniper's router software for E-series routers, called JUNOSe has marketed the DPI version as part of its "Intelligent Services Edge" portfolio, which it described as "leveraging a single, consistent operating system and high-performance hardware to flexibly deliver many service types -- including broadband routing, voice, multimedia and integrated security, as well as application-level awareness... "

Juniper Network product, JUNOS FIPS requires a licence and is strictly forbidden in Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan or Syria, due to its strong encryption abilities. While forbidded, support is apparently provided through AX411 Access Point Country and Channel Support - Technical Documentation

Acquisitions, Mergers, Joint Ventures

  • 1999 Ericsson and Juniper Networks, Inc., today announced a series of strategic agreements enabling the next-generation of multi-service IP network solutions. The first of the agreements is a contract that allows Ericsson full rights to distribute immediately the M40 Internet backbone router as the Ericsson AXI 520.

"Since November 1999, Juniper has acquired over 14 companies. Each acquisition is for the respective company in its entirety, unless otherwise specified. The acquisition date listed is the official announcement date of the agreement between Juniper Networks and the subject of the acquisition. Juniper Networks is headquartered in the United States.

November 1999: Juniper acquired Layer Five, an intellectual property design firm.

The company's US$4 billion acquisition of NetScreen Technologies is its largest purchase. NetScreen had acquired Neoteris before this acquisition.

Unisphere, before the Juniper acquisition, initially comprised three other key networking equipment manufacturers:

Redstone Communications,

Argon Networks,

Castle Networks.

Siemens had bought Castle Networks for $300 million in 1999 and then combined it with two other acquisitions to form the Unisphere Networks. Before Unisphere's sale to Juniper, Siemens bought back the Castle portion of Unisphere to form its own subsidiary.

Most of the companies acquired by Juniper are based in the United States. Juniper made the majority of its acquisitions in 2005. Most of the acquired companies are related to computer networking and associated products. Apart from the complete acquisition of the other companies, Juniper also bought the intellectual property of Nexsi Systems in May 2002. US-based Proxy Networks, Inc., based in Boston, Massachusetts, a unit of de Anda Capital LLC, acquired the Proxy remote control software product line of Juniper Networks in 2006.[13] Proxy Networks has assumed responsibility for the continued development, marketing, sales and support of the Proxy product family, which Juniper acquired as part of its purchase of Funk Software."
